not got a clue
a kernel however is the centre of an operating system. in linux's case a small core file that is loaded on boot which contains all the needed background gubbins to actually make the computer do something. does things like passes messages around as well as more critical things like controlling harddrives and connecting a pretty application to the actual hardware. can't live without one. well.. you could if you're a hippy or someone who doesn't like computers... but that's not the point. |
The kernel is the heart of the OS. It handles all the hardware interfacing and controls all the software.

kernal, kernel, kernol, kernull...
the kernel is the base program that connects all the regular software to the hardware, like kewp said. it sits beneath all the other programs you normally see running. essentially, it's the program that makes linux linux, or unix unix, windows windows, ect. most other progs like solitare or a word processor can be ported from one o/s to another, without too much problem. (assuming you have source code...)
