What does the desktop background depend on?

I'm running linux mint 13 (cinnamon). If I set a picture as my desktop background, does the desktop depend on that file or is a copy made? That is, can I delete the original picture without my desktop background changing? If so, where is the file for the desktop background located after I delete the original picture?

The Wallpaper is set every time you log into X11. You can't delete it.

If you select a picture that is located in a folder somewhere in /home and you then delete that picture you are going to lose your background. If you don't believe me try doing it.

I have described how to set a Wallpaper (independent of the distribution) in this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...as-4175442667/

What your distribution does when you select a wallpaper, isn't much different.
