what does the '|' do???
I usually use the command
ls | more i know what it does but a couple of dayz before i just tried to search some formal documentation typa thing for '|' but couldn't find it? can anyone plz tell me what does it do??? |
The | is a pipe symbol. It takes the output of one command and directs it to the input of another. In this example, you are taking the output from ls, and piping it to the input of more.
Search for "pipe" and you should be able to find heaps of information. I hope this helps --Ian PS: Try "less", it is a better version of more. |
The pipe mechanism is described on the bash man pages. Do 'man bash' and look for the paragraph Shell grammar - Pipelines.
