Question What does "system load" mean?

Hello to all!
I have very simple question: what does "system load" mean?
Under Windows there are no such parameter. But system monitor under linux show this parameter. What is the formulae?
I think it something depends on interrupt's controller timer but want to elaborate for clarity:-)
