what does 'build up the drivers from the source code' mean?
 
what does 'build up the drivers from the source code' mean?

I have downloaded the driver of Rtl8187 for the wireless usb card to install in my Redhat Linux Enterprise 5 ,kernel 2.6.On the read me, it said to Build up the drivers from the source code'.What does that mean.

Help, am new to linux.

If the driver is not compiled, then you have to compile it. From a command line, change into the directory where you extracted the driver files. Then issue the following commands (one at a time):

Code:

./configure
make
make install

Optionally you can run make clean afterwards, which cleans out the temporary files created when you configure and make.

And if you have the driver with an extension of tar, then you need to do

Code:

tar -xf xyz.tar.bz2
It will give you a new directory named xyz, where you can do what smoker said !

Replace xyz with the driver name
