What does 'etc' mean?

Example: /etc/X11/

etc = "et cetera" ;)

the "/etc" directory in *nix is where common config files, and similar things live.

I am sure it got its name back in the beginning of *nix time, when someone must have said something like "we need directories like usr, bin, lib, etc." ;)

It's where your "system wide configuration settings" go to be global on your box.
