What do I do with rpm?

Hello all,

Well I thought I give Linux a go since going to forums and sites people are recommended about moving to Linux with its no hassle with viruses, security problems etc. So far I'm impressed with its impressive stylish desktop design, speedy performance etc.

I've got SuSE 9.1 Personal and installation went fine. The only problem is that I got the rockwell riptide problem and the only driver I could find for this is from linuxant, however the OS version is supports is SuSE 9.0 with kernel version 2.4 etc...should I still use it?

If so, I downloaded the rpm file and now since I am completely new to this OS is there a special place I should put the file? like var or bin or somewhere? I tried istalling it by double clicking but it came back with an error in Yast with the filename and the site recommends going to console 'Konsole' and intalling it, so I did with the error:

Quote:
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm
Thanks in advanced

- Jane

Hi

Yes i did put that command in Konsole before. I renamed the file to make it easier to type to riptide.rpm and typed:

rpm -i riptide.rpm

It came with the error listed above

You shouldn't really rename rpms coz rpm my think they are corrupt and may not install them properly. It looks like you have some package manager running in the background that why rpm is giving you that error. The best thing to do is reboot so that the rpm database is not locked, go to the folder with your rpm and then install it from the terminal as follows,

rpm -Uvh packagename

I don't know, I got the same message and that just meant I wasn't logged in as root.

You logged in as root, right?

Hi

Thanks for your replies. Yes i was able to run the installation when I switched to root, but I received an error that it's not compatible with the system or kernel.

So I uninstalled SuSE, but something went wrong with the boot getting a blank screen and restarts all the time so I started fresh with XP, but this does not mean I'm giving up on Linux . So I'm thinking of getting Mandrake 9.2 as this is compatible with the drivers I want to install.

I would like to dual boot with XP (because I got family members who are more familiar to XP), I've done this before but I didn't think I did this right. What is the proper procedure for dual boot? I've only got one hardisk, single drive, NTFS with XP.

I read you have to partition for mandrake, if so, when I install mandrake 9.2 can I tell it which drives it can use to install the OS and swap drive?

A nice step by step procedure will be nice to dual boot if that's okay with you who's replying .

I'm pretty sure Mandrake let's you configure you're partitions at boot. It'll recognise your Windows partitions, and propose to create the linux ones.

Should be pretty self-explanatory

Hi

Yes Mandrake 9.2 did install without any problems and the driver installation worked as well, now I can play some of my music files .

Thanks all for your helpful and informative support I'll ask more if I run into any problems
