Returning to the original question, I'd suggest Mepis. That's an annual release. One year will be based on the latest version of Debian stable, the next year will be carefully updated with material from Debian testing. The last time I tried it, it was very good.

Every release there's something new and "innovative". And they only have 6 months to have the job done. "Stability" is not in their dictionary.

+1 for Mepis. Yes, it's based on Debian stable but if you use the community repository you get a lot of up-to-date packages from a great team!
