what distro

I know its been asked a thousand times, but I'll be a little more specific.
I need a distro that i can

1. Download all necessary files on this comp., move it to my linux laptop (via usb), and be able to boot/install it totally from harddrive(via grub). (DONT say do internet install)

2. has ability to compile (lfs..)

3. smaller the better (as i ONLY need it to compile some things)

I have found Puppy 4.2.1 quite useful, except in the compiling department..and searching on google hasnt helped.

Hi vendtagain,

Did u tried 'Damn Small linux' as it can be used with USB as well, and hopefully will suit most of your requirements. But it can only be used over 32-bit machines. So, I don't know whether it will be fruitful for you or not.
Otherwise , you can try Xubuntu , Zenwalk as well.

Cheers,
Kapil

GRML and Hag will fit nicely there

I have been remastering botth for about a month now:)
LOL

specifically, they can boot "fromiso" (without extracting iso)
they can b persistent from usb/hd/cd
they can boot and install from hd to hd
can be remastered
have all the power of the Debian repos
compile anything

Specifically, go get my grml-magix
found in thorshammer
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...remble-751227/

grml-magix is my remaster of grml-medium
http://multidistro.com/hammer/fluxboxp.html

http://multidistro.com/fluxboxp/fluxboxp.html

plays on 128mb ram, need 400mb space for grml-magix
can also boot toram

includes many apps
abiword
k3b'
isomaster
lots of stuff
you run as root too
if you want

Best of all?
I already setup grub menu.lst in boot folder
just edit for partition and boot
I set it up for (hd0,0)
best for usb
