Some systems will have an /etc/*release* file some may have an /etc/*version* file which will indicate which distro you are running. All linux standards base compliant distros will provide this information by running the command:
Code:
lsb_release -d
Evo2.

Hi there, eee pcs come preinstalled with a very outdated Linux distro called Xandros. I think that is probably what you are using.

Here is a great website that will answer some of your questions and give you an introduction to the eee: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/

I don't have any experience with Xandros, so I can't really be much help. My eee came with Windows XP pre-installed, but then I installed a distro called Fedora. Good luck!

Based on some googling around, I'm thinking that it's either Xandros or Ubuntu that is the OS (or OS base) on that machine, and more likely Xandros.

Can you show us what you have in the folder /etc/init.d by doing the following commands from a terminal:
Code:
sudo cd /etc/init.d
sudo ls -la
NOTE: You may or may not need the `sudo` part -- but try to show us what's in that directory.

I'm going on tidbits of info/search results here in these searches & pages:

https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...webcam-719427/
http://www.google.ca/search?q=eeepc9...Aofficial&sa=2
http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?...Language=en-us
http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?...Language=en-us

PS - looks like snowpine got there first but the more of us who think Xandros, the more likely it IS Xandros

yes

A new distro will be like any new operating system. You will need to back up your files. I recommend Ubuntu because it is user-friendly and easy to get into.

So 5sugarnoodle2;

Now that you know you need a new system, what are you thinking about?

If you want to backup just your /home/username folder
just tar.gz it

Code:
 tar -pczf home.tar.gz home/
EDIT: as root, cd to top level

Code:
cd /
then tar it

It's difficult to say it exactly. We don't know what type of data and where you stored as well as we don't know what storage devices you own. Assuming all data is stored in /home directory subdirectories and consists of a lot of small files the method suggested by linus72 is suitable. In such case large pendrive could be sufficient. On the other hand if you collected hundreds of AVI files or thousands of MP3 files storing them in TAR.GZ file isn't reasonable.

The best method of backup data is to buy external drive equal in size or bigger than hard disk in your machine. Then you have to decide if you want to see your external drive just from Linux or you want to see it from Windows too. Next you prepare partitions and format external drive. Finally you backup data. The best method of backup is to use rsync command.
