what did I do?

I used gnome-terminal to mount a fat32 drive into my /home/dleo account, then i tried to mount my floppy drive as well...and for some reason, the desktop dissapeared. I couldn't do anything, I had to restart the computer, and when I logged in it said

"failed to open or create /home/dleo/.gconf -test-locking-file..." "...permission denied (errno=13)."

What did I do wrong? if its of any consequence, the drive I tried to mount also has XP on it.

It looks it's not your fault. Youhave probably found a bug. Next time when something like this happens, you may try ctrl+alt+backspace (emergency X restart).

Resseting your machine made a number of programs not to close correctly. I think you should delete the file /home/dleo/.gconf -test-locking-file (if needed, do is as root).
