What command to copy from desktop to server? Getting "permission denied"

Ok.
I'm a newbie. here's the scoop.

I'm logged on to a server as root, lets just say at 111.11.1.111

I'm on an ubuntu machine with a file that i'm trying to copy from:
/home/user/Desktop/

the file name is: nagios-3.1.2.tar.gz

I want to copy this file from the desktop, to the /tmp/ folder on the server.

I tried scp /home/user/Desktop/nagios-3.1.2.tar.gz root@111.11.1.111:/tmp/

but I got a "/home/user/Desktop/nagios-3.1.2.tar.gz: permission denied" error.

any ideas? Thanks for any/all help.

If your attempting to copy from the Ubuntu to the server then you don't have the rights as root from that desktop. From the server that you are logged in as root you could 'scp Your_Ubuntu_IP:/home/user/Desktop/nagios-3.1.2.tar.gz ./'. You will be queried for the 'user' password.

You could 'man scp'.
