You can play plenty of games on Linux, eg. the Unreals and Quakes and quite a few more and they generally run as well if not better than on windows.
Personally I don't view my computer as a toy, and I think there are far better ways to spend your time... there is a limitless amount of things you could be learning to do with Linux. |
make art!

It's according to what you like to do. There is a lot of software divided into categories here:

Go download Enemy Territory. It's free and it's multiplayer! It's a first person shooter game (Return to Castle Wolfenstein).

Here's some of the stuff I do on my linux rig
learn how to write code. I'm a newb on this forum so I cant post urls yet but if you search around for an online book called, "Thinking in C++", it has some great entry level tutorials and examples to get you started writting code. I use vi and gcc to write and compile for now but there are some pretty nifty gui's for fooling with code available in linux. Otherwise you can hang out in IRC with Xchat or something, I like lurking in #linuxhelp on undernet to glean some answers I havn't thought to ask yet. I generaly just leave it running in the back ground then scroll through it every now and then to see if any thing interesting was brought up. Puruseing news.net boards with Knode or pan is another way I while away the hours. I often find programs, utilities, links and knowledge there that gets me started on a new adventure, my latest being trying turn an old pc I had lying around into a pvr with an app called mythtv. another fun pass time is playing a simple telnet space-game called mtrek, Yes, its been re-born but is now called jtrek by the kind soles who re-created it. If you like online role playing games, theres an apparently free graphical mmorpg called planeshift that I downloaded a tarball for but havent installed yet. It looks pretty interesting and I plan on checking it out soon but I want to get mythtv up and running first. I discovered it's existance from a news group as well. |
very interesting suggestions guyz, thx

Your question might as well be "What can I do on a PC?". At least in terms of general categories (ie, games, programming, Email, graphics, etc) anything you can do on a Windows box you can do on a Linux box. -- J.W.
