:Pengy:
hey this is Mr X. i am running beos right now, but i will be making a linux lan with about 5 computers with sub 600Mhz CPU's . what exactly are the minum (not 'its possible minimum') but the minimum before its just too slow to deal with. so what do you people think?

Hi beosmr.x, welcome to lq.

Quote:

Processor: an x586-class or above processor is required. This includes Intel Pentium I/II/III/IV/Celeron, AMD K6/II/III, AMD Duron, AMD Athlon/XP/MP. Hyper-Threading is supported. SMP multi-processor machines are supported. (*)
Memory: at least 64 MB is required (32 MB for text-install); 128 MB or more is recommended.

I'd reccomend as much ram as the box will hold if your planning on running x.
good luck.

no, what IS the actual recommended, not the essentials. nobody dares to run mandrake with kde with 64MB of ram and P-I proc. thats just stupid.
okay; i already knew the answer, i just wanted to know what everyone else thought. at least 800mhz with 256 ram if you dont like to wait all day. there. ive run mandrake 10 on a p-III 500 and its unbareably slow.
thanks.

hi,

i've had mdk 10.1 running on a celeron 330MHz box, with 512MB RAM. It was acceptable performance-wise - not dazzling, but just about OK for general-purpose use (no multimedia!!!).

As Peacedog suggests, make sure you've got plenty of RAM (definitely no less than 128MB - I've had machines with faster processors than above but much less RAM show dreadful performance)
