what are %s, %u, %n suffixes?

What are those suffixes one can use when setting up short cuts to start applications or links? And what do they do? Maybe someone can point me to an explaining internet site because I haven't been able to find anything on the topic. Thanx.

what program are you referring to? Most of the time, a configuration file (like /etc/samba/smb.conf) has these special tokens. They are replaced by some value, for example, your hostname. (%m in the smb.conf)

KDE uses this too. Look into the settlings of icons and menu entries e.g. for K3b. Don't know their purpose either. Not globally defined under Linux?
