i'm not using rh, but i think i can help you a little bit:

for burning cds you can use the console program cdwrite or xcdroast (which is only a graphical user interface for cdwrite)

ok, in suse i've solved the problem with a scsi-emulation:

1. open the /etc/modules.conf file in an editor
2. search the line:
alias scsi_hostadapter off

and overwrite it with
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
3. and the open the /etc/lilo file and write under your standard booting selection the line
append="hdc=ide-scsi"

instead of hdc you have to user your burner device
4. run
lilo

on a shell
5. reboot
