what's a good distro for a linux n00b?

howdy. i want to install linux on an old computer, mainly to learn about linux, to free up resources on this machine by moving apaphe and mysql servers over (i do a lot of PHP dev. for my website), and because i may be working with Unixy stuff like Solaris, AIX etc. in my field later on.

what's the best, free, distribution for me to pick up, install, and goof around with? keep in mind i want to be able to shift to a new variation, like one mentioned above, without having to relearn everything.

I'd start with Knoppix, since it will give you the feel of Linux without having to partition your hard drive. Also, you won't be permanently installing it or writing to your HD, so your errors will be erased when you reboot (of course, so will your work).

The distros I have had experience with are Mandrake, SUSE and Slackware.
Each one installed without error and detected and configured all hardware.

I'm using Slackware now and I would recommend you try it. There are plenty
of helpful, knowledgeable and friendly people here to help out.

cheers

Bob, the HD was already reformatted, so the Win95 that used to be on there is long gone.

i'm not a big fan of floppies these days. i probably won't even get a floppy drive on my next computer.

hk, someone else on another forum also recommended Slackware. maybe i'll try it.

thanks for the suggestions, both of you.
