what's the usage of these codes?

Hi,everyone

I find that almost every assembly program in linux contains following codes:
pushl %ebp
movl %esp,%ebp

If I delete those codes,it will cause segmentation fault.
So what's the usage of those codes?

any suggestion is appreciated.
