What's the log file for boot up message?

After compiling a new kernel, I can see some [FAILED] in the init process. Which log file is the one that I have to look into in order to get those message back for debugging?
Cheers,
F

try typing dmesg in the shell

and have a root about in /var/log/
a copy of dmesg is there is it scrolls by too fast.

syslog would be your best bet.
