What's the different between centos and redhat?


I'm trying to install software for redhat enterprise, may I run it on centos? what's the different between rhel and centos?

If you posted the software then we might have a better guess. RH is a commercial product and not all the features and programs make it into the open version Centos. If the program you are wanting to run uses a RH only module then it won't run. If the program is a generic open source then I'd think a good chance it could run.

CentOS-Redhat

I have seen only two things written for RHEL not run on CentOS:

One was a RedHat application, I had to use the CentOS equivalent. It worked.

The other was from a vendor (We were installing on HP and software from Oracle as I remember) and the package actually checked for RHEL and version before installing. The installer would not work, but once I bypassed that (wrote my own /etc/redhat-release file removed immediately after the install - LIED to it) and got it installed it ran just fine.

For the record, though that worked I cannot recommend it. Find, if you can, the CentOS package or create your own.
