I would stay away from FreeBSD for while as a noob. I really like it, but might be a little bit to much for a newb.
Suse is a good no nonsense distro. I really like Yast.

Peanut is a good minimal distro. Vector and DSL are good alternatives.

Try all of them until you find one that clicks...
