There's webmin but the best way to configure your web server is to just configure the config file it uses and the same goes for a mail server, all depends on which one your using as well.

Why is it best to directly configure the config. file rather than using some tool for it.

becuase for configuring directly the config file u have to remember the syntax. whereas through gui which i think u don't have to remember the syntax.

And what about cpane, ensim, plesk, exim etc.

Because knowledge is power and vi is the smallest
common denominator...

If your web-interface dies a sudden death ssh is
still likely to work.

for initail stage how one can remember all the syntax of configuring different types of server. for intial stage gui is best to learn or not??

You can't, noone can, keep the manual handy and read the comments. Or even better find a tutorial on the net then work through it.

If you're interested in learning how everything works then no, you're better off putting more effort into reading the docs and edit the configuration file by hand. Otherwise if you just want to get the service up and running quickly with common settings then the GUI is good.
