are you aware that you're supplying no information that might help us to get a grip on your problem?

What does that mean?
The partitions don't get mounted?
- What does 'fdisk -l' say?
- What file system are you using on the external drive?
The unit doesn't report to the USB controller?
- Does it show up using 'lsusb'?
- Is the cabling ok?
The drive doesn't even spin up?
- Is its power supply okay?

At any rate, the first thing I would check if I were you is whether the drive works when connected to a different computer. If it does, the problem is related to your PC; if it does not, it's clearly an issue about the drive itself (or its own AC adapter). As little information as you provide, it could be anything from a messed-up file system up to a hardware failure.

But you definitely don't need an extra driver, as you imply in your chosen thread title. These external HDDs, USB pen drives, card readers and many more devices like that are built according to the specification for "USB mass storage devices". They're all managed by the same driver which has been included in all major OS's for more than ten years.

If it is a Western Digital Worl Book you can try smb://mybookworld/ I connected to mine using smb://mybookworld/public I used Ubuntu 12.04. Worked like a charm
