If the OS is not detecting your disk, where did you install it? Please post the output of
Code:
sudo fdisk -l

WD 500GB Mass USB Storate Detection Ubuntu 11.10

Gentlemen
Soon after posting the problem, I found that Ubuntu had been detecting the Mass storage all along. I was not looking for it at the right place.
The problem stands resolved.
I had read that one strong reason for Linux was the strong support given by the community to problems, especially to the problems of the newcomers to the OS. I have expeienced it myself first hand.
I could not inform the forum about resolution of the problem in prompt manner because I had forgotten where I had posted the question. This problem was solved by an email asking me if my problem had been solved.

Great stuff LinuxQuestions.org
