ways to fix mildly corrupted FC4?
On my winxp system, I dnloaded the four FC4 ISOs and verified them with secure hash alglorithm --- all good. Then I burned them to disc but when the installer checked disc1 it failed so I tried burning another, and another, and another to no avail --- on my HDD the ISO image passed the SHA1 checksum but once burned to disc the fedora installer says its bad. Discs, 2, 3, 4 were declared OK by the installer. Running out of discs and hoping that the corruption was minor and located in a non-critical file and that I could rebuild or reload or something, I went ahead and installed and all seemed to go ok.
Now that I have the personal workstation version up and running, I notice some screwiness like when I try activating the red ball update icon, there is an err msg saying the script can't be run and when I activate an interface suddenly the web browsers won't load, but for the most part everything else seems ok. So, my question is --- now that I have this minimum functionality (I'm using it to write this) is there a way to rebuild, or update, or reload without having to go through the intermediate step of burning ISOs to discs? The auto-update (red ball icon) is only for paying customers, right? Will the personal workstation version allow me to burn CDs? I can't find any non-mp3 disc burners. |
open a terminal su to root type yum update. I haven't use fedora in a long time but that should do it. if not check the sources in your yum.conf i think.

Wow --- that sure worked like a hot damn! It dnloaded, verified and updated 170 apps --- I just hope that the corruption was in one of them. I'll re\boot and try some stuff that didn't work last time.
Thanks. :) |
