WAS AN XP USSER 10.1 linux for 7 days need help please

For most of my computing life i have been a windows fan now 7 days into linux 10.1 i still can not connect to the internet even after following various instruction guides from various sites down to the letter allthough my network icon is now saying ethnet0 is fine i still cant connect any help would be well should we say the difference between having xp on my hardrive in a seperate partition or being linux free help please anyone. oh my system is a p4 Ht 2.61ghz processor,ge force fx5200 agp graphics ,1.024mb ddr memory, gigabyte GA - 8s655fx-l motherboard , ntl silver cable 35100 modem(with usb and lan (using lan),realtek 8139/810 network card, 2 80gb sata hd (not raid connfigerd), soundblaster live 5.1 platinum, firewire askey com corp fw322/323,hauppauge win tv 878/9 vfw, hp 5g colorodo tape drive,cd rom,dvd rom,cd/righter,dvd/righter.i connect to the internet via the cable modem which has an ethernet cable plugged into the ethernet port on the silver ntl modem this runs to my network card with one cable so the connection is as followed internet - modem - networkcard does this help i have no other computers sharing or attached to a network as i dont have a network just one linux pc trying to access the net and i do appricate all your input as i feel quite alone and with no surport with the operating system.ping.ip.of.cable brought up netmonitor after about 3 minutes i thought nothink was happening then it appeared as follows

eth0 sending 36 average 10
eth0 received 0 average 0

but i also had eth1 realtek network card tab flicked to it 0 in all feilds then auto flicked back to tab1 eth0

the icon in the system tray says network is up on interface eth0
and to get this to stay active the modem has to be static once turned into dhcp icon in system tray has red cross through it and says network is down on intrface eth0

also when trying web browser could not find usable proxy script error message pops up in top lefthand croner

i set my realtek network cards ip address one number different from eth0 which i think is my modem used same gateway address from modem and same netmask as modem only thing is iam using static instead of dhcp on modem eth0 setup

only numbers that worked were
netmask 255.255.255.0 on lan and cable setup

gateway 82.19.236.254 on lan and cable setup

ip on modem 82.19.236.29

and ip on lan can be anythink dont affect icon in tray

but when i try to connect i get unuseable proxyscript configuration error message or web address not reconised even if its google

anysense anyone please

Please open a console, login as root type the following command and post here the output so we can try and help you:

ifconfig

This will give you some info about the current network state. I'm not sure what these icon is showing (not using mdk here), but ifconfig will tell us.
Are you positive this cable modem has an IP? If so, is this ip given to you by the isp? (My cable modem doesn't have an IP...)

johnson_steve 05-24-2005 02:08 PM

ok 1 computer and a cable modem is a network. eth0 should be your lan card in your computer the cable modem is a router and usualy a dhcp server. the modem should have an ip address on the bottom. goto a command prompt an ping that address if that works your network is up and can talk to the modem. your modem may or may not be a dhcp server. even if your modem is a static ip(for your computer eth0) will still work. in the settings for eth0 the gateway must be set to the ip of the modem and you have to set it up to use the dns server that your isp provides.

Your description of the situation isn't fully clear to me. Please open a terminal (konsole), type 'su', then root password when asked (you'll switch to root temporary this way), then run
ifconfig
and
route
Plase post the results you get.

Steve the mac address on bottom of modem cantains two letters so i didnt wait for a responce from it as it takes 4 minutes and i was so excited about maras little console venture but anymore surgestions apart from phoning them(have you ever tryed god allday to no avail )and iam all fingers thanks for any help you can give nice one mate what country are you from

johnson_steve 05-24-2005 07:37 PM

that sounds like the number on the bottom of your modem is a mac address not an ip address every ethernet capable device has a differant mac address it's like a fingerprint. I've never seen a cable or dsl modem without a ip on th bottom. I saw in your other (double post) that that guy has no ip for his modem.

coolvibes 05-25-2005 11:26 AM

Steve seems you are correct there use to be another part to the sticky lable on the bottom of the modem they rip of with stickyback well mine is missing dont ask me how 2 years ago i was at work when they came to install my broadband and the person who let them in for me didnt have a clue she gave a load of random numbers for my password and didnt write them down when i asked her for them she couldnt rember l.o.l so i have had problems since day one but surely someone out there can sort it allthough i have said to myself on a number of occasions if i cant fix it no one can who knows maybe iam just braindead keep the surgestions coming and hope mara can help allthough hard to track down thanks all on line until about 9

johnson_steve 05-25-2005 02:02 PM

the most common ip ive seen for these things is:

192.168.0.1

maybee if you know the model# you coulg google it? it looks like eth1 is your lan card don't know what eth0 & eth2 are though

Why do you think eth1 is the lan card? I don't see any difference.

coolvibes:
To be sure that you are using the correct ethernet device you can run the command 'cat /etc/modprobe.conf' or 'cat /etc/modules.conf' (I'm not sure which one) and post the output here.

I searched a bit for your modem, and from what I can tell you should configure your lan card to use DHCP instead of a static IP address. If you still have windows installed you can check that configuration and use the same in linux.

Hope this helps

cause it says ethernet just like mine

coolvibes 05-26-2005 11:08 AM

ill try all surgestions thanks

gerrit ill follow your surgestion as well but i use usb for windows and eth for linux so would the settings still apply

i see you are talking to gerrit "cause it says ethernet_just like mine" iam sure he didnt mean to sound like he was having ago its just meanings to words are perscieved different in other countrys for e.g belgiums english makes them sound arragant like germans when infact its just there perseption of english and the way teachers teach.

thanks for all your help though mate i keep it coming unless one of the so called linux masters sorts it first and you can be sure 4 forums working on this problem 14 days later i need all the help i can get over 700 people have read my posts made some nice mates but have to talk through windows to them after 20 years i hate microsoft and all they stand for sorry c u all later

johnson_steve 05-26-2005 12:02 PM

i didn't think he was being arogent. I just thought he asked a question. I'm not one of those "you best talk like me boy!" americans. I mean we stole the language in the first place :)
