wants to know basic of linux
Hi All,
Please give all the answers in terms of red hat. 1. If i am in /home/test/file. Then all the above three / (salsh) are root or only the first / is root ? then in such case what is other two / ? 2. what is / and ~ ? is there any difference ? what are they ? 3. what is Red Hat, Ubuntu ,SUSE ? What is there relationship with Linux OS ? what are they ? 4.what is the difference between putty and VMware workstation ? are they same ? |
1. the "/" location is the root directory.
2. see 1, and "~" is a users home directory 3. they are distributions of Linux. They take the Linux Kernel (Linux is NOT an OS in itself) and package it with GNU tools and other software to make an operating system. 4. erm... they are *utterly* unrelated pieces of software. Why would you ever think that they are connected in the first place? |
Prathamesh,
About that last question, Putty is an application which lets you connect to any computer(Windows/Unix/Linux) using telnet or SSH(Secure Shell). VMWare Workstation is a Virtualization software, using which you can create Virtual Machines and install any Operating System on it.(Except MAC OS, IBM AIX I guess). |
