Want to recover data from Encrypted partition (created by EXT3 Ubuntu 10.04)
Hello friends,
I am facing a serious problem.I installed UBUNTU 10.04 and encrypted it during installation.
I accidentally erased some of the necessary files from root folder.
now the the OS is NOT booting.luckily i still have the encryption key
i have some important documents in that drive (desktop folder).
please help me to get those files, as i need them badly.
thank you,
Shikhar
PS: I have tried to run Live Ubuntu it shows the Root, but it does not enter any of the folder.

From Ubuntu forums.
https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/install...d-volumes.html
After you get your files off, it would be a good idea to do a fresh load of the OS. Since you don't say what "necessary files" you erased, and since this was a fresh OS install, it's just easier to blow everything away and start fresh.

Did you bother to read the link in the first post, where it tells you how to manually mount encrypted partitions after booting??

Right. And I gave you a link that told you how to mount your partitions manually.
So now if you boot the system as a "live user" (as you've said you can), you can MANUALLY MOUNT THE ENCRYPTED PARTITIONS, if you follow the directions.

No, that is NOT what's shown in the document. READ IT. When you boot, you have to load a module manually, then you will be able to proceed. If you can't follow the instructions on that page, then reload your system from scratch, and recover your data from backups. It doesn't get much simpler.

Sorry, I am not going to read the web link I provided to you line by line.
It doesn't get more step-by-step than that...there are, at most, 3 steps. Read them, follow them.

If you have problems with instruction from link provided to you by TB0ne, write what you did already and where you stuck or what you don't understand.

Skip this, go to "Troubleshooting" section. If you can't understand that, open terminal (from LiveCD) and write Show results here.

Not at boot, after boot...
I believe that what TB0one is referring to is the procedure under "Troubleshooting" halfway down the page in the Ubuntu Forum post.
If you read carefully, it says that, after you have booted the live-cd and it is running, you then should be able to mount the encrypted files/volumes with the correct password using the command "mount".
Try to get the live-cd up and running, and after that try to open the files. If you have a problem, post back exactly what you tried and what the results were.

I am not able to mount it directly by:
it gives an error.
Screenshot-1.jpg
I mounted the partition by first editing /etc/fstab file.
and inserting the line
Quote:
|
/dev/sda7 /media/sda7 ext4 defaults 0 0
|
Screenshot-2.jpg
now by entering command
sudo mount /dev/sda7
Screenshot-3.jpg
but it doesnot ask for any passphrase!
i am able to view all the file and folders.
the problem is whien i open USERNAME folder inside the HOME folder.
it gives the error "The folder contents could not be displayed.you donot have permissions necessary to view contents of __"
