Want to recover data from Encrypted partition (created by EXT3 Ubuntu 10.04)
Hello friends,
I am facing a serious problem.I installed UBUNTU 10.04 and encrypted it during installation. I accidentally erased some of the necessary files from root folder. now the the OS is NOT booting.luckily i still have the encryption key i have some important documents in that drive (desktop folder). please help me to get those files, as i need them badly. thank you, Shikhar PS: I have tried to run Live Ubuntu it shows the Root, but it does not enter any of the folder. |

https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/install...d-volumes.html After you get your files off, it would be a good idea to do a fresh load of the OS. Since you don't say what "necessary files" you erased, and since this was a fresh OS install, it's just easier to blow everything away and start fresh. |

can this be done after logging in as a live user? thank you very much. |

So now if you boot the system as a "live user" (as you've said you can), you can MANUALLY MOUNT THE ENCRYPTED PARTITIONS, if you follow the directions. |

It doesn't get more step-by-step than that...there are, at most, 3 steps. Read them, follow them. |
If you have problems with instruction from link provided to you by TB0ne, write what you did already and where you stuck or what you don't understand.

moreover, i am not able to find any module to be loaded manually as mentioned by TBOne. |
Skip this, go to "Troubleshooting" section. If you can't understand that, open terminal (from LiveCD) and write
Code:
fdisk -l |
Not at boot, after boot...
I believe that what TB0one is referring to is the procedure under "Troubleshooting" halfway down the page in the Ubuntu Forum post. If you read carefully, it says that, after you have booted the live-cd and it is running, you then should be able to mount the encrypted files/volumes with the correct password using the command "mount". Try to get the live-cd up and running, and after that try to open the files. If you have a problem, post back exactly what you tried and what the results were. http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/...Ask_a_Question |

Attachment 4929 I mounted the partition by first editing /etc/fstab file. and inserting the line Quote:
now by entering command sudo mount /dev/sda7 Attachment 4931 but it doesnot ask for any passphrase! i am able to view all the file and folders. the problem is whien i open USERNAME folder inside the HOME folder. it gives the error "The folder contents could not be displayed.you donot have permissions necessary to view contents of __" Attachment 4932 |
Hi,
here is another procedure. I assume you used the alternate installer and used lvm to create an encrypted root and swap partition. 1.) Boot from the liveCD and become root by typing into a terminal Code:
sudo -i Code:
aptitude install cryptsetup lvm2 Code:
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda7 sda7_crypt Code:
Key slot 0 unlocked. Code:
vgchange -a y Code:
2 logical volume(s) in volume group "ubuntu" now active Code:
ls /dev/ubuntu/ 5.) Mount the logical volume named root. Code:
mount /dev/ubuntu/root /mnt Code:
sync Hope this helps. |

I was assuming that /dev/sda7 was your encrypted device. As it seems /dev/sda7 is not encrypted. If you want to mount /dev/sda7 just do
Code:
sudo -i Code:
sudo -i |

That is probably because you are opening nautilus a normal user.
Try as root Code:
nautilus |

but the USERNAME directory contains ony two files. i mean there is no Desktop,Documents, ....in the USERNAME folder.as shown in the shreenshot. http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/7...reenshotxx.png |

Code:
sudo nautilus |

I am not sure if this will work since I never encrypt my /home. I always encrypt the whole disk. You could try the following as root
Code:
mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev Code:
/etc/init.d/cryptdisks start Code:
exit |
|

the first command did not work. |

Oops, sorry about that typo. It should have been
Code:
mount -t devpts devpts /mnt/dev/pts Again, I strongly recommend to try the link(s) provided by fbobraga. |
edit: erased
