Read the docs to see how to install it on the mbr.

Make install just installs the user land tools on your disk, but it will not put the loader on the master boot record of your disk. You will probably need to configure it properly as well. I don't know if grub2 can use unmodified grub.conf/menu.lst files. Changing the bootloader is something that I would not do blindly, since you can render your system unbootable.

Prob.: My system is now unbootable!!

This post is by using live cd. I have successfully installed grub 1.96
The screen shows grub version 1.96 and the command prompt appears. how to reconfigure the grub?

"make install" should have installed the docs somewhere under /usr/share/doc or /usr/local/share/doc or whatever. Look at the make install output to see the files that were installed and see if you can find something. It should have installed at least a man of info page if nothing else...

Just google .. grub2 doc .. and find some comments :

1) ..very little or no documentation for grub2 ...
(There is no doc or similar in the tarball = grub-1.96.tar.gz)

2) "Stay Away From Grub2"

3) "It is a research project for the next generation of GNU GRUB."
