Want to get Fedora 17 online.

I'm running VMWare for school. I need to get Fedora 17 to access the internet through the VM for just two assignments and then I can ignore the existence of Linux until I attempt the NOS120 class again. I have been able to get CentOS and every version of Windows online without an issue.

I've tried NAT, I've tried Bridged, I even pushed the Lan Segment, Host Only, and Custom radio buttons just for fun. I know the protocol here is to post a wiki link to a 500 page thread about the essence of the Linux experience. I even opened those and tried to follow along. Then I would try to do the same thing and nothing matched.

If anyone can tell me how to open Konsole on Centos that would be great as well. It might get me one step further. Also, if you guys ever try to work on your own cars and come to a forum that I frequent I promise not to tell you to read the Factory Service Manual instead of just telling you how to unscrew the oil cap. I promise. Especially if you have a Honda or Acura. I will even tell you all of the steps to reset your Maintenance indicator light.

Here is my ifconfig info:
eth0: flags=4099<UP,Broadcast,Multicast> mtu 1500
ether 00:0c:29:f7:d1:c8 txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet)
RX
RX
TX

device interrupt 19 base 0x2000

lo:flags=73<Up, Loopback, Running> mtu 16436
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0
look txquelen 0 (Local Loopback)
RX Packets 80 bytes 6744 (6.5 Kib)
RX erros 0
TX packets 80 bytes 6744
TX errors.

Fedora 17 reached EOL in July 2013. No longer maintained or updated. Sorry.

Thank you. It turns out going Host Only was the solution. Didn't sound like it would work but it did! Only one more assignment using 17 then I can delete it.

Nevermind...

True updates are no longer available but just because a version has reached end of life does not mean it just stops working. Is Fedora 17 a hard requirement for class? Looks like the virtual network adapter is configured but not assigned an IP address. You can manually configure an IP address via the ifconfig command (as root)

ifconfig eth0 IP_address netmask

What version of CentOS and desktop are you running?

Gnome: Applications-> System Tools-> Terminal or right click on the desktop and select open in terminal.

Glad that you managed to fix it yourself. I must say your first post was fun to read. So welcome to LQ.

And if you end up in discovering that Linux is not that bad after all and come back for advice later down the road, and I happen to see that post, I promise I won't link to the Linux Documentation Project. :-)
These are many ifs, I know. So best of luck with your studies until then ...

KEEP in mind the very last fedora 17 updates would only have updated firefox to 22( firefox-22.0-1.fc17.x86_64.rpm )
the current is 37

ff 22 is way out of date
do not use

This is nice, clever way of telling us, "Please don't tell me to go read the man page." http://www.desismileys.com/smileys/desismileys_3266.gif

Thanks. NOS120 is required for my degree in info security. I tried it this semester but I had an insanely difficult to understand teacher and an 18 credit course load so he got dropped. I'll save Linux for later. I wanted to work at RedHat since it is an awesome company, right down the road in Raleigh, and my friend is married to a RH Vice President's daughter, but Linux and I are going to need some couples counseling to make it work.

I'll be back. Thanks for all of the replies.

Haha, if you find a good counseler send him right over. I have to use Windows at work and could seriously use some counseling to bring that relationship back to a level where I don't want to yell at the computer half of the day ;-)
