Unhappy WANT LINUX SO BAD but redhat freezes

I HATE THIS! i want to run linux so bad on my new hp laptop, but it wont do it, PLEASE HELP! i got redhat v9, and when i install it asks me if i want graphical or text, and i press enter for graphical (ive tried text too) and then it loads a bunch of stuff and comes to a blue screen which asks me if i want to scan the installation disks before i begin setup. And from there i cant press anything, its like its frozen, because the selection keys dont work or anything, so i think it might be a driver problem, but i really just NEED SOME HELP! im so sick of windows and the errors it gives me every day, so im switching to linux (which i know nothing about!)

My first Red Hat try was 7.3. It froze hard as a rock! Tried Debian and got it installed and working (more work, though). I'd suggest leaving Redhat behind and trying Mandrake. The installer is better, the distro is compiled for pentium and above, so it runs faster on your machine (I believe Redhat is still i386) and the apps and config tools are more friendly. Good luck. Don't give up (If all else fails, get the FreeBSD 4,8 set and go super unix!)

Please do not ask or start your ongoing questions in new threads or multiple forums. Your original thread can be found here regarding this problem: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=132844

May I ask everyone to respond there instead of here as this thread will be closed now.

Regards.

is your laptop linux compatible? if it is, sounds like the disks could be bad. either way, i agree with vector to try another distro, either mandrake, or get knoppix and see if that loads. at least then you'll have more info about running linux on your hardware, and it never hurts to have a knoppix CD around, either.
