Wanadoo Livebox
I am new to linux and would love to make the switch to one of the distro's. The problem I have had in the past is connecting linux to my Wanadoo Livebox. A search on the internet and this forum today still does not really help.
Can anybody tell me if there is a linux distro that supports the wanadoo livebox 'off the shelf' so that I do not have to try and follow complicated instructions to get it working. This has really put me off trying linux as I spent many an hour beating my keyboard before trying to get Mandrake Linux working with my old speedtouch modem with no sucess ! |
Any distribution will support your Wanadoo LiveBox without any problem if you connect through ethernet configuring your network card to get its IP and DNS through DHCP. Don't use USB, that's all.
If your computer came without an ethernet card, almost any cheap card starting at 10 euros will do the trick and should be instantly recognised by any linux distro once plugued in. You could as well use a wireless card but that can be a little more tricky to get the card working depending on the brand and model you have. Anyway, as long as you don't use USB, your livebox is nothing else than a simple router as seen by your computer and does not need any special kind of support from the OS. |
Thanks for your advise. I have previously been trying with a usb adaptor so that may be what the problem as been !
I will repositioned my livebox and try a wired ethernet connection to the PC I will be running linux on. :newbie: |
As I'm now living in SW France, I've got the France Telecom/Wanadoo version of Livebox, but as penlost indicated, there is little information on setting this up. There may be plenty on the French forums, but my French isn't that good yet.
Is there a decent guide somewhere with fairly specific advice on how to set it all up? Obviously the ADSL kicks in as soon as the XP desktop has loaded: how are all the settings obtained through Linux? As soon as I get a working distro, I'll need to be on the Internet. I currently use the USB cable, but there is an ethernet card in the Dell. Just need a Cat5, I suppose. Cheers |
