W2K + SuSE install prob.

IBM 380XD Laptop, 3.9 gig partitioned 1.99 C:\, 1.8 D:\

install keeps saying 1.8 isnt big enough (I stripped pkgs. out to keep under 1 gig) but it wants to convert drive to 3.9 gig.

also, red letters in drive list says "delete windows partion"
so I try to expert mode/partition and nothing works....
any suggestions?

SuSE is supposed to be easy to install but you cant prove it by me lol and ive done tons of NT4 and W2K installs on computers that supposedly cant run it.

I need winblooz to keep running while trying out Linux.

I take it your trying to install SuSE on an existing windows partition. If so Suse requires a linux filesystem.

You will need to backup the d: drive, delete it and allow SuSE to use existing free space.

Not sure what the actual min requirements for an install. Check SuSE website or install documentation.

Leave it undefined.

ok, deleted partition then installed and everything went well except sound.

reboot and now couldnt see option for W2K lol.

had to reload W2K, now what is needed to dual boot?

michaelk 09-29-2003 07:53 PM

Are you using grub or lilo? I'm guesing lilo. Reinstalling W2K wiped out the bootloader from the MBR.

BTW you did not have to reload W2k. All you had to do was add an entry for your bootloader. Did you have the option to create a boot floppy? Does the SuSE 1st install CD have a rescue mode?

Before I get into a long post let us know what the answers to the above questions.

Grub I believe, remember im a noob w/ Linux lol

3 options in GUI, forgot what they were and a bar on left that counts up. :(
theres a command line box at bottom buut no clue what to put there lol

Im not sure if "rescue" was an option.

KenCo 09-29-2003 08:43 PM

checked CD, rescue and rescue floppy are in there

michaelk
Im probably gonna help you break the 1000 post mark today lol

p.s. while in SuSE how do you start the modem and get on theinternet? I can hit "update? SuSE" and its fine

I tried K or I connect? or something like that but nothing happened :(

KenCo 09-30-2003 04:32 AM

ok, got the MRBOOTER progy (read it in another thread) and set it up,

reinstalled SuSE, w/o modify MBR option

used MRBOOTER to load SuSE and now im posting from Konqueror lol

seems a tad slower than W2K but I have no clue yet where modem settins/BPS can be changed.
