Vsftpd problems
Hey,
I am just setting up an ftp server with Fedora Core 5 and vsftpd and I have run into a few things I am unsure of. 1. Anyone can log in anonymously but can't really do anything...it shows a pub folder and an uploads folder but I have no clue where these are on the drive. When I turn the anonymous login off it won't start the service...says failed. I am trying to just have it for 1 person...so the one user name on my computer is Kaltrop....I would like for it to only allow this user to login with password and keep him in the home dir....I can login with him but navigate the whole computer with it...I turned the chroot on but then it doesn't recognize him as a user...won't let me login. One of the other posts mentioned that there might be 2 conf files in the drive....I can see a couple when I browse the vsftpd folder on the ftp but I can't see them on the server to delete them. 1) Please don't bump your own post within 24 hours - it is against the rule. This is to allow everyone around the world to see your post.
2) If you are only setting it up for one user - ie you don't require anonymous logins, then a more secure solution is SSH. SSH also has SFTP and SCP which allow file transfer. SSH is more secure than FTP (and telnet), because SSH encrypts all data, while FTP and telnet send everything as plain text (including passwords). I suggest that you install a SSH server (OpenSSH) on your system. Allow connections on Port 22 through your firewall, and you should be able to connect. Fedora Core 5 already comes with OpenSSH, but you may need to install it. I have some information on SSH and SFTP here. It is possible to get Chroot working with SSH, but I don't know how :) I hope this helps --Ian |
