VNCVIEWER time out ?

I've just tried for the first time to set up vnc. I'm running Xnvc as my server. However, everytime I try to use vncviewer, it never connects, it keeps timing out. I've tried to connect to my local computer and also one remotely; both having the same result. Do anyone have any suggestions ?

Can you post the output from:
netstat -nlp

What command are you using to connect to the server with?

Make sure that whatever command you are using to connect you are connecting to screen 1 and not 0 (port 5901 and not 5900).

I think that I am connecting to screen 1, but it still times out. At the prompt I type

vncviewer <ip_address>:1

Which returns :

VNC viewer for X version 4.0 - built Oct 6 2004 08:06:12
Copyright (C) 2002-2004 RealVNC Ltd.
See http://www.realvnc.com for information on VNC.

Then it hangs for a while and times out. When I go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ and check port 5901, it fails, i.e. can't see me.

Do you have any firewall rules in place blocking that port:
iptables -nL
