If you're new to Linux, and any virtualization solution will do (don't need VMware), I'd suggest looking at Virtualbox. In my opinion, it's a better option for most deployments under 32 cores.
I never used VMware, personally, because it didn't used to be free/open. It still isn't, really. Anyway, Virtualbox is a fairly mature piece of software.
