vmware linux under windowsxp

I have a pentium 3 800MHz computer with windows xp installed on one partition (d: ) and windows me installed on the other (c: ). I standard use windows xp. I installed vmware on windows xp. Then I tried to install linux RedHat 7.3 on the d: drive with vmware. Vmware works well and I can boot from cd. I install linux from the two cd's (cd3 not needed) and then it says finished. But when I try to boot linux in Vmware nothing happens. The (vmware)bios is allright but after that bios I see nothing but a cursor in the upper left corner of the screen. It doesn't blink. I can not do anything. What am I doing worng? Anybody who did install Linux RedHat 7.3 with Vmware under windows xp, please help me...

Have you checked Vmwares homepage for trouble shooting? Often you need to do some tricks to get Linux to work.

did you install GRUB or LILO in the MBR of the primary drive of your Viruatl Machine? Or, did you create a bootdisk during installation? If yes, try to boot with it (set your VMware Phoenix BIOS to start the boot sequence from floppy drive).

I installed LILO on my virtual drive. Not on the MBR of the real disk and I don't know whether there is a MBR on the virtual disk. The program did not create a boot disk so I cannot boot from floppy.

It doesn't really matter where you install LILO. But you must follow the instructions step by step on installing the OS in VMWare, especially when you get to video configuration. It is not easy, I've learned. I had to install it about 3-4 times to get it right.

Yes, the VM has a MBR. It emulates a physical machine so it has pretty much everything a physical machine will have. I installed LILO to the MBR and it works fine, but if you don't follow their install instructions to a T, it won't work. It is very picky. I would suggest trying again, even though that isn't quite what you want to hear.
