hanks Ztcoracat. It wqas all quite strange. First I used the command
Quote:
install mate-desktop
and it did what it did before. It went so far and said ready to install mate manually. Well, that stumped me. So next I entered
Quote:
install mate-desktop-environment
and it installed it. I re-started and entered
Quote:
cat /etc/linuxmint/info
and it still said cinnamon. So I did what you suggested and used the Software Manager to check and found that Mate was installed. So I then uninstalled Cinnamon through the manager. Restarted but when I entered the ETC command again I got the same information. However everything looks differently so I am sure it is Mate.
Here is what I get:
Quote:
LEASE=18
CODENAME=sarah
EDITION="Cinnamon 64-bit"
DESCRIPTION="Linux Mint 18 Sarah"
DESKTOP=Gnome
TOOLKIT=GTK
NEW_FEATURES_URL=http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_sarah_cinnamon_whatsnew.php
RELEASE_NOTES_URL=http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_sarah_cinnamon.php
USER_GUIDE_URL=help:linuxmint
GRUB_TITLE=Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon 64-bit
When I entered $DESKTOP_SESSION I got:
Quote:
No command 'mate' found, did you mean:
Command 'matc' from package 'elmer' (universe)
Command 'mame' from package 'mame' (multiverse)
Command 'mat' from package 'mat' (universe)
Command 'tmate' from package 'tmate' (universe)
Command 'kate' from package 'kate' (universe)
Command 'late' from package 'late' (universe)
Command 'yate' from package 'yate' (universe)
Command 'make' from package 'make-guile' (universe)
Command 'make' from package 'make' (main)
Command 'mute' from package 'aumix-common' (universe)
Command 'date' from package 'coreutils' (main)
mate: command not found
However, as I say, the desktop look is definitely different!
Unless you tell me that there is something wrong I'll play with the display and try VLC tonight.
Thanks again for all your help.

You're Welcome.

From your description it sounds like you have Mate installed.

Just to clarify; when you logged in did you have the choice to choose either Cinnamon or Mate?

Like this?

no choice. I just typed in
Quote:
$DESKTOP_SESSION
but it said "mate is not a command." Then I remembered you ask me to type in
Quote:
sudo apt-get install -f
and I just did it to see what happens. It started yo open some packages, but didn't go too far, and I didn't want it to muddle what I had so I closed the terminal, but it had already finished what it wanted to do. I tried to look at the photo you suggested but I can't see any photos. This could be because I have no-script on. I "allowed" for photo bucket but it just kept spinning.Well, I'm going to watch a DVD now. Let's hope!

Thanks again and I'll let you know.

Oh dear, VLC hung. What values do you have for the input codec? I have 1000ms, 300, 300 and I think 1000. I'll try increasing the 300 to 1000 and see if that works. If not I'll try SMPlayer. I assume I have dvdcss2 but I will check.

What this command does below is fixes package dependencies in linux if any. Run it again till is stops.

Code:
sudo apt-get install -f
Never shutdown a terminal while a command is running. If something went wrong it would output that information. I really think downloading the iso of linux mate 18 than
installing it will let us start fresh. Since you are backed.

https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_sarah_mate.php

To download click download than linux mint 18 than below select mate desktop.

One more thing do not try to update the bios in your system. I have read posts on another fourm that this will brick
the motherboard meaning new pc.

Hi Dave,
I ran the command install -f and here's what I got:
Quote:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 32 not upgraded.
OK thanks for the advice. I guess because I don't see anything [like an hour glass or a moving dot] I don't know if it has hung or what.
OK will re install 18.

Hi Dave,

Tried to download iso but I chose the harvard university thinking it has to be a good one and my system failed. So will try again using Univ of Manitoba later today. By the way I thought I would see if I have dvdcss and here is what I got:

/
Quote:
lib $ dpkg -L libdvdcss
dpkg-query: package 'libdvdcss' is not installed
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents.
reynoldh@reynoldh-Aspire-XC-603 /lib $ dpkg -L libdvdcss2
/.
/usr
/usr/lib
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libdvdcss.so.2.2.0
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2
/usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2/README
/usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2/changelog.gz
/usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2/AUTHORS
/usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2/copyright
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libdvdcss.so.2
Isn't ths different from what you have?

First this is have you updated your mate install yet if not go to update manager reload it update all listed. How is mate acting now any freezing?

You do not need to download and files from a web site Open a terminal and copy paste

Code:
sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install libdvd-pkg
libdvdcss2 depends on the libdvd-pkg, on installation it should install libdvdcss2 check see if it was installed using the same code as you did when look for the liddvdcss2
Code:
sudo dpkg -L libdvdcss
If not than

Code:
sudo apt-get install -f
let this command finish if anything needs fixing you will fix it hopefully, it did on my laptop.

Now we see how things work if everything is working last step

Code:
sudo apt-get autoremove
<-- this just clean the system of unneeded packages.

Hi Dave,
Here is where I stand. I downloaded the iso image for Mate and I did the checksums. So Linux Mint Mate is ready for installation. I wasted time because I made the mistake of trying to download from the Harvard site and it failed. So I went back to the U of Manitoba site and it was quick. However, before I can install I need to finish backing up my files. I discovered that one folder was not fully backed up. The way I do it is to copy using the terminal, and for some reason, this afternoon it kept saying that the target folder was not a folder.

All my files and packages are up to date. Am I not understanding something? I originally had Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop. I installed the Mate desktop and removed the Cinnamon one. So do I have Linux Mint 18 [based on Cinnamon] with the Mate desktop or is it only the desktop that is different between the two versions of Mint?
I am going to finish copying my files if I can and then do the libdvdcss install. I thought I would wait to hear from you: re-install from the Mate iso or no need because it was only the Mate desktop that was your concern?

Mate seems stable so far.

Hi RenH

In post 106 you said you removed cinnamon desktop. by going to the update manager and updating the install of mate desktop. Mate deskstop is not the same as cinnamon. though It may not have any updates needed but always check. When you removed the cinnamon desktop dependencies of that desktop maybe still installed. I want to see how the system is after the my 113 post I have added another command at the end of 113. which will clean the system. We will see how the system functions and go from there before a whole reinstall.

Hi Dave,
here are the answers:
through Software Manager I have libdvd-pkg:
libdvd-pkg
Version:*1.4.0-1-1

For dvdcss and dvdcss2:

Quote:
sudo dpkg -L libdvdcss
dpkg-query: package 'libdvdcss' is not installed
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents.
Quote:
sudo dpkg -L libdvdcss2

/.
/usr
/usr/lib
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libdvdcss.so.2.2.0
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2
/usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2/README
/usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2/changelog.gz
/usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2/AUTHORS
/usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2/copyright
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libdvdcss.so.2
When I did a list I noticed the following line:
Quote:
/usr/lib $ ls
command-not-found libvlccore.so.8.0.0
For install and remove I got the same answer!

Quote:
sudo apt-get install -f

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 32 not upgraded.
Quote:
sudo apt-get autoremove
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 32 not upgraded.
So it looks like I am updated in everything. Unfortunately I have to use dvdcss2 instead of dvdcss, which you suggested could be the problem. Let's hope not. I will try a dvd this evening.

Mate appears to be more stable -- hasn't hung except that time when I tried to play a DVD.

I was trying to find out if I had the dvd-pkg but couldn't do so on the terminal. I read in an article that I should use:
Quote:
dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info)
to examine archive files but I'm not sure if I am doing it correctly. So I used the Software Manager to locate dvd-pkg. However, it didn't tell me its location.

Yes, it would be great if I didn't have to do a complete re-install, so let's hope!

First you are confusing packages from your post
Quote:
Unfortunately I have to use dvdcss2 instead of dvdcss
The command that you are using dpkg -L libdvdcss will list all files with that name in a directory.

All you need to do is check synaptic for these packages are installed, if not installed than install libdvd-pkg first. Which should pull libdvdcss2 and install it as well. if it does not Just install libdvdcss2 from synaptic that is all is needed. Than try a dvd movie again. If you can not play a dvd than I need to research your graphics card. I will back to you on that.

From the commands you did looks like all is updated that needs to be.

Looks like I have them all installed.

I checked Synaptic and found the following are installed:
libdvd-pkg v.1.4.0-1-1 [latest] installer
libdvdcss-dev 1.4.0.1-local library for accessing encrypted DVD - development files
libdvdcss-dev 1.4.0.1-local library for accessing encrypted DVD
libdvdnav4 5.0.3.1 DVD navigation library
libdvdread4 5.0.3.1 library for reading DVDs

What's not installed are the development files.

Bad news. Here is what happened when I tried to play a DVD.
First with VLC
1. Hung after 1.27 min
2. Replayed same DVD, might have got 15 minutes and then it hung.

Changed to a new DVD [my own i.e. not a public library DVD]:
3. It hung after 16 minutes.

Switched to SMPlayer with new DVD
4. Hung after 21 minutes.

In fact, as it stands now, the system is worse than with Cinnamon. However, outside of playing DVDs the system seems more stable. I haven't hung the system yet.

I linked your issue on ubuntu fourms last night. I now think it is hardware related. I wish you could try another CD/DVD drive to troubleshoot this. Or it could be related to the graphics card bug this is what I am trying to figure out. And see if there is a workaround. Is this your language dvd?

This is long shot be check this

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...ts/PlayingDVDs

I believe regionset is in synaptic install it from there.

All i want you to check is this

Setting DVD Region Code

Follow how to do this in that section. If you live in Canada or US it should be set 1. If this is not set to 1 set it to 1.

just my two cents worth:
have you tried re-sampling your movie then run it in vlc ?
sometimes it is the data and not the sw using it.

have you tried playing the same movie in mplayer to see if it plays correctly?
