VLC, GNUMP3d, streaming from remote cli server

I've installed both of these on my remote Gentoo server that I can only connect to via ssh, http and ftp. I have some .avi files on this remote server and would like to stream these files from an XP desktop. (gentoo -file-> xp)

I've looked around but can't seem to find a guide on how to stream multimedia files (avi in this case) from the gentoo machine to a XP client using VLC for instance.

Can anyone suggest a link or a few steps I can take to get things started? Right now I don't know if it's just a matter of connecting to the url of the file on my remote server with a VLC client or if I have to set a process running on the server first or what, so assume absolute noobilism.

Okay, I figured out GNUMP3d (suprisingly straight forward, install it, configure it by setting the location of your music directory and port number (default 8888) in /etc/gnump3d/gnump3d.conf and then do "gnump3d &" and that's it, you're away, http://localhost:8888/ the shizzle.

Except my browser isn't connecting to it..

I've checked port 8888 is open, I've checked my iptables rules, I've checked other services on other open ports... I even chmod 755'd the media folder to make sure gnump3d could access to, but when I go to http://propergandas.box.net:8888/ it just hangs and then nothing. Anyone got any ideas?
