# is the comment character in ssh*_config files. The values you see are the commented out defaults. Uncomment (or better yet copy the line) and change the value.

You really will find xming or XWin-32 much easier to configure, but whatever floats your boat.

Long Hard night, Lots of frustration.
Did the reading in the links you provided and cygwin did not load the data in the locations indicated in the document. Startx ran one time and is no loger available on the vista machine??? Also the cygwin.bat file takes me to a screen with a $ prompt but when I try to log in I find that nobody, root and all other login attempts fail.

Any ideas on how to remove cygwin from the Vista machine? It of course does not show up in add/remove programs.

Can I ask - exactly what is is that you need to do on the Linux machine? Because it it's just editing plain text files, (the only thing you've mentioned so far albeit indirectly by saying you're trying to use gedit), then you are making it far harder for yourself than it needs to be. Forget about cygwin and just use a non-graphical editor such as pico, vi or emacs.
If on the other hand you want to run other graphical applications on the Linux machine from the Windows machine, like Firefox or Gimp or whatever, then by all means carry on struggling trying to get cygwin or some other X server going.

I bought a Walmart Special gOS box for 199.00 and am coming up to speed. The gOS box is in a back bedroom and I'm using puTTy to ssh in. I am reading the forums, (contributing where I can) and trying the command line strings that I pick out of the responses. (i'm 70 years old and pretty close to blind so taking a class in the local college or reading the various books is not going to work for me right now)
I cownloaded xampp and I have an apache server up and running and I brought up a Forum phpBB2. With the Xampp package I got proftp and so I can ftp in from any windows box in the house.
I can transfer data back and forth and I can edit files using nano (i will try Pico)but this is a learning process and I want to expand to include use of the uxbox as a file server, sniffer etc.
Being sort of blind the accessibility theme available in gnome and the gtk tools is a good thing for me. gedit, thunar etc are so much mor visible in High Contrast mode. So. I would like to be able to use them from my Vista Laptop across the LAN.
Samba installed with very limited functionality (I know just keep reinstalling until I get it right)
So that brings me to Cygwin, which I had hoped would allow me to run the uxbox apps across the lan with gnome theme High Contrast.

STATUS REPORT
I deleted the cygwin directory. Did a System Restore to 5 days ago and searched the registry for cygwin and found nothing.
At the uxbox console cli did an xhost + so every host on the lan has access
