virtual desktop not working
Hallo
I have Kubuntu, KDE4.2 The problem is this: I can work normally with ctrl+alt+F7 graphical login/session, the default one, but I am unable to have a working desktop in ctrl+alt+F8. If I switch to it, I can see the list of boot text messages and the last one is: *** grep:/usr/lib/kde4/etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc : no such file or directory not starting K Display Manager (kdm-kde4); is not the default display manager *** Clearly it is some misconfiguration and something is pointing to the wrong file. Do anyone know where to fix this? I already tried to configure again kdm as the default manager, no changes. Many thanks in advance Rosanna |
The X server is running on console 7 and there is no other X running on any other console. Virtual desktops are something else - you should be able to switch desktops with the desktop switcher, which you can find in the corner of the screen (it looks like a mini view of the available desktops).
Virtual desktops are a feature of the window manager (KDE in your case), not the X server, and you can use them if you have many windows open simultaneously and you don't want them all piled up on the same desktop on each other. I often use virtual desktops to run long tasks (like long downloads) on a different desktop than the one where I do work that actually needs me. I'm sure there are more uses... As for the errors you see in console 8 - they are probably harmless and you can ignore them if everything is working. |
Thanks for the clarification, I normally use virtual desktops in my work ;)
I want to be able to use "console 8", to open another full graphical session as I did before upgrading to kubuntu 8.10 + KDE 4.2. Perhaps I posted in the wrong place? Thanks |
