Question Vim - Just starting to explore Vi - Mint 16

Progress is encouraging but seem to have no software packages. I expected these to be in the Linux Memory stick I bought. When trying to enter insert mode it reports: I expected these commnds to be present when I loaded Linux Mint software but they don't appear to be present.

Has anyone experienced this or is there something I am missing?

It reports what? Your post makes no sense.
