Viewing Video File from portable storage

I have an Acer Aspire One and am trying to view some video clips from a usb stick. The are two puzzles when trying to play them using vlc. First vlc doesn't see the usb stick. Secondly if i copy the file to the hard drive I can play the clip without any problem. Can someone explain this to me as I am new to linux

Many thanks for any help

How did you arrive at the conclusion that VLC can't see the files on the USB stick? If you can copy the file then Linux sees it and VLC should see it too. When you open VLC, browse to the /media directory and there you should see the USB mounted and you will be able to browse into it. And by the way - you don't specify what Linux you are using.

We need to know a little more details about what you did in order to tell you where you went wrong.
