viewing partition list
 
is there a command i can use to view a list of the current partitions on my hard drive and the filetypes? i need that info so i can set up my boot loader (grub).

Fdisk will list your all partitions.

so just open fdisk and it'll list them without me having to make any changes and stuff?

More precisely would be
/sbin/fdisk -l

If you have it you could use cfdisk. Looks nicer :D
