Video Turorial - what format would you prefer?
 

Hi all

I have been putting together a few video tutorials for a few folks that are new to the Linux world and was wondering what your thoughts on the format are...

Currently doing swf files with no narrative - all text info boxes with relevant info in.
Would a narrative be better or do you think it makes no difference either way? Also I chose swf because it could be used in any web browser, both Windows and Linux (or Mac etc ;))

I prefer text/image based the best. Simply because if it is for linux noobs, one of the problems can very easialy be setting up video codecs.

Wow, when I read the title the first thing which ran through my head was "not flash." I, and many other people, have flash disabled by default because of the retarded over-use of it in advertisements and the fact that it rarely plays perfectly on my system. So... if I go to a site with flash I usually just move on. If I really, really want to see it, I may click on it to open it. And then it works only about 50% of the time because I have flash6 in my default browser. So if it's 7, I need to open a new browser... and it may not work anyway.

Anyway, if you must make a video... something open and small would be nice. No realplayer, no flash, just something simple. If it's streamable then that would be nice. But it should be downloadable -- for sure. So someone can watch it while offline and working on their computer.

Just my opinions... but I hate flash with the heat of a thousand suns.

For this purpose, you should definately use an open format - if not, it is pointless. Xvidcap will record desktop video in (you guessed it) Xvid format, for instance, and Istanbul records in Ogg Theora.
If you are feeling slightly more bold, you might use the LaTeX Beamer Class to create Powerpoint-like .pdf's.
