Video module Boot selection

I have a motherboard (PCchips P23G) with P8M800, and I am wondering if there is a module which would better utilize the hardware capability of this chipset?

I am using a 19" crt monitor, running at 1280x1024. My system performance is sometimes disappointing, but a CPU benchmark shows reasonable performance. I'm wondering if graphics rendering might not be using the chipset fully, and have been digging, trying to find out whether Linux utilizes the GPU rendering, or simply reverts back to a VGA type mode.

Can anyone point me in the right way?

Thanks.

Details: Slackware 12.1, PCChips P23G (P8M800), Celeron D (256), 2gb 533 single channel. Normal clocking. Swap doesn't get hit. nbench provides exected performance numbers
