Video freeze, until mouse or keyboard activity

I have Mint 13, Maya for almost a year. I like Mint, but I have 2 or 3 small problems.
The biggest problem is that when I play video (any format, any player, both on my hard drive or on Internet or Youtube), then it often freeze and sound will loop (short part of the sound, maybe half second) until mouse or keyboard activity. I can resolve the problem if shift is pressing (holding down or leave something heavy on the shift button). I don't know the reason for this.
Before Mint I did use OpenSuse and I did have the same problem there. But in OpenSuse I was able to log in to some-kind of fail-save mode and there I didn't have this problem. I often think if that is possible with Mint, or if there is other solution for this.
Another problem is that sometimes keyboard is typing 0 (zero) by it self. I did have that problem in OpenSuse too. I have tried to replace the keyboard but still the same. I have even tried to replace the mouse. This just happen sometimes and seems to differ between logins, so sometimes when I turn on my Desktop, I will only be able to type 2-3 words between I get one or more 0 (zeros), but next boot I don't have any problem. If I open any text editor when I have this problem, and just keep it open, without touching the keyboard, then soon there will be lot of 0000000's there. This is only happens when already loged in the OS, but not before the Linux boots (and don't happens in windows). I have search this (google) but only found one Windows related http://www.computing.net/answers/har...g-0/85341.html and I don't know how to find out if I have two or more installed keyboard in my Linux OS.
There is other problem with my laptop (cannot use USB keyboard in Linux), but probable I will have to put that question to new topic (different computer).
Here is some info about my Desktop

thaiiceland,

I was wondering if you had gotten anywhere with this. I have a problem similar to this one. I have a Radeon HD 6450 AMD Video card, opensuse 12.2, installed AMD drivers for this card. Everything "appears" to run fine, except whenever I run anything 3D, the window the app is in is black or stagnant, until I move the window around by its title bar. As long as I keep moving the window around, the 3D images will keep moving.

No I still haven't got any reply. first I did ask this in Mint forum (already two times), without reply. Now I am trying here and still not any reply.
I don't know for sure, but sometimes I think this is something to do with the graphic card. I did use OpenSuse (a year ago) and there I did have the option to start the system in "fale-safe mode" (I think it differ in some graphical settings), and there I didn't have any problem with playing videos. But I did loose some display settings that did required the system in "full mode".
But as I say, I am not sure what it is. I am not using my desktop for heavy games, So I would prefer more to be able to watch video without problem. To start Mint in some-kind of "fale-safe mode", would be fine for me (at least until I will get info for solving this).

I had some problems with starting the operating system at times, screen came up really bad. Couple of things you might try: on your grub boot loader additional boot parameters try adding nomodeset, that might help.

Another thing I tried: in the xorg config files, for the device type I used the "radeon" driver (built in with operating system), this gave me full function of my video driver, although I do not believe that I had the full "power" of my video card, it did allow me to use 3D effects afterwards.

Hope some of this helps. I am still searching for proper solutions, as well as asking in other forums. If you make any progress, please update here, I will do the same.

Thanks. I think I have solve this for a moment. I can play video and now the video seems to play without freezing. The blinking-cursor is now blinking all the time too (it did always stop blinking).
I think this is not the best solution for everyone, because I think I will not be able to use the full future of the graphic card. But it is enough for me. I am not using the desktop for playing games and don't need all the speed and possibility's that the card have. The very most graphical activities are playing some music videos and cartoons for the kids. This is enough for me.
The thing I did is to find what exactly where the parameters in the OpenSuse failsafe OS. I then look at the parameters and try to image which of them can possible be related to graphic.
Because I use Linux Mint I did then in Terminal (this probable differ with other flavor, most of them using gedit)
sudo pluma /etc/default/grub
There I change the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nohz=off highres=off processor.max_cstate=1 nomodeset x11failsafe"
and save and close the text editor. Update the grup with
sudo update-grub
And restarted the desktop. Seems to work now. I don't know exactly witch of the parameter did do the trick but I think I will check that later (it is now 02:00 after midnight in Iceland and I want to go to sleep with my wife).
For me it solved at the moment. I didn't change the xorg config files, because I didn't found the "device type" part in my file, so I did leave that part. If I will find out better solution (that will allow to use all what the graphical card can do), I will post it here.

After quite long time I have now tried to find what parameter did do the trick. Since last time, I have installed the Linux Mint 14 and of course I did have the same problem until I did change the parameters in the Grub. But now I did play with the parameters for a while, trying to find the one that did the trick for me. It seems to be the highres=off.
Code:

$ sudo pluma /etc/default/grub
and there I changed the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT to
Code:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="highres=off"
and then of course update Grub
Code:

$ sudo update-grub
But because I have have new Linux-Mint, I include here the info for my system. It is just for info, if someone have same problem and similar system.

Thanks alot, this as well fixed the issue for me ! ( Debian 9 - stretch )

Actually I struggled to test it first, since grub really sounded like the wrong place to fix a bug like that, but well, I was wrong ;)

geekborg 12-26-2017 05:18 PM

The issue was fixed for me too, using highres=off as kernel parameter.

my computer:

Solved for me too. Freezes has gone.
