It'll play MPEGs and all sorts of AVIs. IIRC I had to install some extra CODECs for certain formats. Is there something speciic you need to play?

Smile try alternative to linpus

The multimedia playback on the acer is rubbish.Im just about to try an Ubuntu based distro that is optimized for the acer.It is called Linux4One.The iso file is available here

Don't try alternatives until you have properly explored other options! VLC runs very well under Linpus and plays anything I have thrown at it. I once saw an hillarious post on the Aspire One forum about getting rid of Linpus to run some sort of *buntu because the *buntus are so much better. He then went on to say that network and various other things wouldn't work, but of course *buntu is superior so that's ok!

The issue is with Linpus is that is a seriously cut down version of Linux because the hardware is very limited too. However, the work they have put into it makes it a very useable OS that does work if you learn a few of its quirks. You will probably spend far more time trying to get *buntu to work and it probably won't run as fast.

So, don't worry about Media Master, just install and run VLC which works very well.

The Linux4One runs perfectly well.I installed it yesterday.Maybe its the wireless networking that doesnt work but I couldnt say.I have a wired network.Yes Vlc is a good media player but I now have K9copy,Dvdrip,Audacity,Wesnoth and much more.If you have the Acer restore disc it costs nothing to try something new.If nobody did that we would all have windoze on our computers.

I am not saying don't try other things, I am just saying that if someone is not familiar with Linux there are much simpler things than installing a new OS when the one that is on actually works perfectly well. There is little point in programs like k9copy, dvdrip etc when there's no CD or DVD on the machine.

Also, one of the real beauties of Linpus is it takes fifteen seconds to boot. These little devices are not fully fledged laptops, they are little devices for having when you're out and about or can't carry too much weight.

How fast to boot is this one you have tried, btw and how fast does it run in general compared to Linpus? (Genuine question, not being sarcastic.)

Also, it's all very well saying you have wired networking, but I'm willing to bet most people want wireless!

Saying that we'd all be stuck with Windows if we tried nothing new is all very well, but getting a newb to try something like changing an OS could well scare them away from Linux.

You can get the wireless working in Ubuntu.. I have it working in Debian on my AspireOne.
Check the Ubuntu AcerAspireOne link below for details.

I would think if someone is customizing a distro for a specific piece of hardware they would have worked out those things already though..
