video drivers problems

I recently got red hat 7.2 with a book I got from a book store. If you are wondering about which book it is the red hat 7.2 bible the only thing is the video drivers that are being loaded aren't working with my sytem because when I try to run GNOME to test the settings I can't see the message clearly it is either blacked out or it is covered some how. I did some looking and they mentioned that I should get the latest kernal for my OS. Now I have just finished downloading patch-2.4.17.gz from kernal.org I'm in need of some assitance with installing this kernal considering that I have it on my c drive with my windows 2000 ntfs partition. Will I have to transfer the file to a cd or can this file be retrieved from my c drive from within red hat 7.2? If so I would like to know how.

As for my display adapter it is a SiS 5598/6326 If anyone has had this problems before and know what is needed ot vorrect my video driver problem please feel free to post your views on this.

Thank you.

Just for kicks because you are using Red Hat and presuming that you have a relatively fast net connect register your system and take advantage of their automated update network.
Typt rhn_register at the command line and fill out the form.
It is easy and very slick. Next run up2date (in fact in case the other command is not right this will get you the right one).
Just for registering your system you get entitled to use the Red hat network to maintain the system.
Have fun.

I had this problem, I found that if I installed the XFREE86-SVGA-3.3.3.1-1.1.i386.rpm it worked ok. You should be able to get this from a website with old rpms, if not mail me and I can send it to you.: fugrat@yahoo.com.

If you get an error installing it that there is a newer version put it on with the force switch
rpm -uvh --force RPM name

yeah, your card isn't supported on XFree86 4+, so you'll need to downgrade to 3.3.6 as that post said, you shouldn't forece the install tho, as it can easily get confusing, not knowing which version you're trying to run and such. just remove X version 4 first and you should be fine, you should have all the rpms needed on the redhat cd's
